It is said that
the fall (15m in height) takes its name from the katukithul tree or thorny
palmyra (Oncosperma fasciculatum) located at the top. There are many superstitious
tales linked to the fall. One is that a vision of a large person clad in
white is sometimes seen descending down the flow of water. Anybody who witnesses
this spectre will become sick.
Another notion
held by local elders is that if someone happens to pass by in the vicinity
of the fall, sand will be thrown up at dusk. In addition, there is a belief
is that during the early hours a blue light travels down the fall in the
direction of Sri Pada.
The fall is situated
at the village of Amunutenne, in close proximity to the Ratnapura Wevelwatte
highway.
The waterfalls on this Ratnapura
- Wewelwatte route are Goksin Falls, Dehena
Falls, Mandanagiri Falls, Alupola
Falls, Beruwatta Falls, Pandi
Oya Falls, Bambarabotuwa Falls, Anda
Falls, Katu Kitul Falls, Wewel
Falls and Hal Falls.
