Fort of Kalutara
This fort was built by the Portuguese in 1622 and was caputured by King
Mayadunne of the Sitawaka kingdom. The battle was lead by his son
Tikiri Rajjuru Bandara (later king Rajasinghe 1) who was 13 years old.
Later it was retaken by the Portuguese and surrendered to the Dutch in
1655 without a shot being fired. It was later enlarged by the
Dutch with the addition of two bastions. Today the famous
Kalutara Temple
lies on this ground.
